Workers’ to discuss organizing at the University of Minnesota

The East Side Freedom Library will host a discussion and panel, What’s Happening to Labor at the University of Minnesota?, on Wednesday, January 10 at 7:00 PM. Panelists will include representatives from University of Minnesota AFSCME, faculty, Teamsters Local 320, Grads United, and Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en Lucha (CTUL). The event is free and open to the public.
A successful walkout of graduate students protesting the Republican tax overhaul and ongoing Teamster 320 negotiations that loom toward a possible strike are the latest examples of workers and students exercising their collective power at the University. These follow recent efforts by U faculty and other employees to unionize. Wednesday’s event will dive into this new wave of organizing, its challenges and future, and the conditions and structures that have moved people to action.
The University of Minnesota is one of the largest employers and one of the largest recipients of tax-payer dollars in the state of Minnesota. How are they treating their workers? How does their treatment of workers effect the quality of the education and services they provide to students and the wider community? What are the larger implications and what impact can more worker power and involvement at the U have on students, the community and the state?
