Immigrant rights activists from Minnesota and Connecticut with union and community allies held a press conference yesterday at the office of Senator Amy Klobuchar to support Nelson Pinos. 
 
While on a short trip to Minnesota in 1994, Nelson Pinos was taken into custody by Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and released. INS later mailed a court appearance notification to an address in Minnesota
 
Pinos, a New York resident at the time, never received the court notification and a deportation order was issued in absentia.  According to Pinos, he was unaware of the deportation order.
 
Pinos has lived in the US for 26 years. He has spent the past 500-plus days in sanctuary in the First and Summerfield United Methodist Church in New Haven, CT.
