History Day projects about labor topics win prizes

History Day is an annual competition in which junior and senior high school students produce exhibits, papers, performances, videos and websites under a general theme. The 2013 State History Day contest, under the theme, “Turning Points in History,” was held Saturday on the University of Minnesota’s Minneapolis campus.

The Minneapolis Labor Review, the St. Paul Union Advocate, the University of Minnesota Labor Education Service and the Minnesota AFL-CIO offered seven prizes for projects on labor topics. The judges reviewed many worthwhile projects and chose these recipients:

For the Minneapolis Labor Review prizes:

“The Triangle Fire: A Turning Point in Workers Safety,” video documentary by Charlotte Hunsicker and Ani Stordahl, Lake Harriet Community School, Minneapolis

“1934 Truckers’ Strike,” performance by Charlie Johnson, John Henry Neuberger and Zach Weier, St. Thomas Academy, Mendota Heights

For the St. Paul Union Advocate prizes:

“Double Victory Campaign: The Turning Point for the Modern Civil Rights Movement,” video documentary by Estephanie Romero-Rodriguez and Devona Thomas, Open World Learning Community, St. Paul

“Keating-Owen Child Labor Act of 1916,” exhibit by Vanessa Bogan and Grace Domingo, Susan B. Anthony Middle School, Minneapolis

“The Communist Manifesto and Its Influence on Labor Reform,” performance by Isabella Isett, Leah Kanihan and Katie Tennis, Highland Park Sr. High School, St. Paul

For the Labor Education Service and Minnesota AFL-CIO prizes:

“The Case of Jenson v. Eveleth Lawsuit,” performance by Melissa Flores-Jaimes, Margarita Gandara, Breanna Jensen and Isaac Sonquist, Anwatin Middle School, Minneapolis

“We Can Do It: Women Factory Workers of WWII,” video documentary by Molly Kiley, St. Francis of Assisi, Rochester
