In an act of powerful solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, delegates attending the AFL-CIO’s 2017 national convention walked out of the America’s Center Saturday to join local BLM activists who had been refused entry by convention center management. The unions had invited BLM activists to speak.

U.S., Canadian and independent Mexican union leaders said they and their members will jointly fight for a strong, pro-worker, new NAFTA, North American Free Trade Agreement. But if they can’t achieve that, they’ll fight equally hard to beat it.
Navy veteran Tom Edwards sees plenty of rhetoric about “supporting our troops,” but said the commitment falls short when it comes to staffing the services they need at Veterans Administration medical facilities. Edwards and dozens of other people participated in a rally Wednesday at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center to call on the Department of Veterans Affairs to fully staff VA facilities.
From dispatchers and utility line workers to health care professionals and FEMA employees, union members are stepping in to help during and after the devastating hurricanes in the southern United States. Numerous labor organizations also are conducting fundraising to aid affected communities.
Protesters rallied in front of the Republican Party headquarters on East Franklin Avenue and marched to downtown Minneapolis on September 5 in response to the Trump administration’s termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Starting Thursday, Aug. 24, and running through Labor Day, Sept. 4, workers and unions will be showcased in the Minnesota AFL-CIO Labor Pavilion at the State Fair. Several unions will have kiosks with information and demonstrations about their work. The pavilion also features live music, giveaways and more.
The thousands of people who attend the Minnesota State Fair will have the opportunity to learn about the pervasive problem of wage theft on Tuesday, Aug. 29. On that day, members of the End Wage Theft Coalition will staff a kiosk at the Minnesota AFL-CIO’s Labor Pavilion.
