MAPE calls on MnSCU chancellor to give back bonus

“We call on Chancellor McCormick today to give his bonus money back to the people of Minnesota,” said Chet Jorgenson, statewide president of MAPE, the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees. “At a time of budget crisis, management should not get a bonus while employees have their wages frozen and are losing their jobs, and students are paying more to go to school.”

In stark contrast to the chancellor’s bonus, the chancellor’s office notified St. Cloud State University on Wednesday that three and one-half MAPE positions were being cut effective June 30. The Board of Trustees also approved a budget that raises student tuition by 3 percent and eliminates 550 positions through the end of the 2010 fiscal year, according to media reports.

“The chancellor already makes nearly seven times more each year than the average MAPE member at MnSCU,” the union said. “MAPE members’ average salary is just under $54,000 per year at MnSCU. It’s little solace to Minnesotans that the Trustees decided not to raise the chancellor’s salary of $360,000 per year.”
