Twin Cities organizations announce May Day strikes, actions

Members of CTUL, Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en Lucha/Center of Workers United in Struggle; and Cosecha announced actions on May 1 that will include a strike.

Organizers said the events will “demand an end to poverty wages, improvements in working conditions, and respect amidst attacks under President Trump and his corporate backers. Immigrants and workers make this country run day in and day out, and deserve to earn enough to meet their needs and enjoy life free of intimidation and fear.”

CTUL members are organizing in the retail cleaning and fast food industries. They also have been part of the movement for a $15 minimum wage in Minneapolis.

Cosecha, a new national movement launched by organizers of other immigrant movements, is fighting for permanent protection, dignity, and, respect for the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States.

May 1 is recognized around the world as International Workers Day. Actions that day will include:

  • 9:30 a.m. – Retail janitors strike by CTUL at the Home Depot store, 1520 New Brighton Blvd., NE, Minneapolis.
  • 12:00 p.m. – AFSCME contract campaign kickoff the University of Minnesota, Morrill Hall, 100 Church St. SE, Minneapolis campus.
  • 1:30 pm – Mesa Latina rally at the state Capitol in St. Paul.
  • 4:30 pm – “Resist from Day One” march starting at East Phillips Park, 2399 17th Ave. S., Minneapolis.

Other groups participating in May 1 actions across the Twin Cities include NOC, 15NOW, Inquilinxs Unidxs Por Justicia, ISAIAH, MIRAC, Navigate and Asemblea.
