Transit Workers reject contract offer

Members of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1005 voted overwhelmingly to reject a contract offer from the Metropolitan Council, setting the stage for a possible strike. However, the vote does not mean a walkout is imminent, union officers said.

Local 1005 President Ron Lloyd said 96 percent voted against the offer, in part because it would have tripled their health care costs.

Voting took place Sunday and Monday and results were announced late Monday night. A report in Tuesday’s Star Tribune said the contract offer would have frozen wages for the first year with 1 percent increases in the second and third years.
