Striking actors picket General Motors plants

EDINA, Minn. – Striking actors demonstrated outside the General Motors parts operations center Wednesday as part of a nationwide protest against the large advertiser.

While pickets marched in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio and other states, negotiators returned to the bargaining table in hopes of resuming talks to end the strike that began May 1.

‘After 18 weeks of a national work stoppage, we will return to the bargaining table with our sidebar committee to determine whether or not the advertising industry can be persuaded to bargain a fair and equitable commercials contract for our members,’ said John McGuire, chief negotiator for the Screen Actors Guild, and Mathis Dunn, chief negotiator for the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

‘This struggle is not just about today but about our future,’ they said. ‘The struggle is not just about eliminating rollbacks, it is also about comparable worth and earning a decent living wage to support your families.’

Issues in the strike include fair pay for commercials that appear on cable TV and the Internet. During the strike, union members have picketed not only advertising agencies and producers, but also major advertisers such as GM and AT&T.
