Stamp out hunger when you visit your mailbox

Nearly 1,500 branches of the National Association of Letter Carriers, including many in Minnesota, are primed once again for national Food Drive held the second Saturday in May. On May 10, letter carriers have volunteered to pick up food donations from customers on their postal routes. This year marks the 11th annual NALC National Food Drive.

NALC President William H. Young expressed pride that letter carriers lend this helping hand to their communities every year by delivering the donations of their postal customers to local food banks and pantries.

?Millions of children ? many from working families ? face hunger every day despite all the great resources of this nation,? Young said. ?NALC members, aided by rural letter carriers and other postal employees, make a huge difference for those who do not receive adequate nutrition during the summer when school lunch programs are closed.?

More than 104 million postcards sponsored by Campbell Soup Company and the U.S. Postal Service have been distributed to branches across the country for delivery to postal customers to remind them to leave non-perishable food by their mailboxes May 10.

In addition, a widespread media campaign featuring Olympic Gold Medalist Sarah Hughes and promoted by Campbell Soup has placed national public service announcements in magazines and newspapers, and on television to tell the nation about the drive.
