Northwest Airlines workers approve strike

By a vote of more than 96 percent, members of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association approved a strike against Northwest Airlines, which could happen anytime after 12:01 a.m. (EST) March 12.

However, the union leadership said it remains hopeful a settlement with NWA can be reached at a negotiation session scheduled by the National Mediation Board for March 7. If not, a spokesman for President Bush said he will intervene and invoke a Presidential Emergency Board to forestall a walkout.

‘This vote sends a strong message to NWA,” O.V. Delle-Femine, national director of AMFA, said in a statement on the union’s website. “As of March 12th, AMFA will be free to engage in self-help. We hope this strong statement by Northwest’s aircraft mechanics & related employees will now persuade Northwest to come to agreement with AMFA when we meet in Washington this Wednesday to resume negotiations.”
