Newspaper Guild files charge against Pioneer Press

The Minnesota Newspaper Guild has filed an unfair labor practice charge against the Pioneer Press, claiming the newspaper is undermining collective bargaining and selectively targeting workers engaged in protected union activities.

The latest activities cited by the Guild are a series of meetings that newspaper management scheduled with Guild members about contract negotiations. The first meeting took place July 22.

The Guild argues these meetings are direct bargaining, which would be a violation of federal labor law. The Guild?s charge will be investigated by the regional office of the National Labor Relations Board.

The newspaper, owned by California-based Knight-Ridder, has been in negotiations with the Guild for more than a year on a contract to replace one that expired July 31, 2002.

The Guild continues to collect subscription cancellation pledges from readers. Forms can be downloaded at www.shoptalknet.org/transfer
