The continuing “Twin Cities Labor Movie Night” film series presents “Norma Rae” Friday, March 18, at 6 p.m. at the United Labor Centre, 312 Central Ave., Room 356, Minneapolis. The screening is free, with donations welcome.
“Norma Rae” (USA, 1979, 114 minutes, Rated PG) tells the story of a young single mother in a southern mill town who gets involved in a union organizing drive at the textile mill where she works, despite the problems and dangers involved.
The film stars Sally Field, who won an Oscar for best actress for her role. It is based on the real-life story of Crystal Lee Sutton, a textile worker involved in the successful union organizing drive at a J.P. Stevens textile mill in North Carolina — as told by New York Times reporter Henry Leifermann in the 1975 book, Crystal Lee, a Woman of Inheritance.
