Labor food bank aids strikers

The labor community has opened a food bank to give support to striking University of Minnesota workers, announced Bill McCarthy, president of the Minneapolis Central Labor Union Council. Donations have flooded in from affiliated unions, community members, and businesses looking to ease any hardship faced by strikers, he said.

?Clerical workers at the University are making a tremendous and courageous sacrifice by going on strike,? said McCarthy. ?They are standing up to stop the backsliding that all workers are seeing in their standards of living. The 120 unions and 65,000 union members affiliated with the Central Labor Union Council are giving these strikers their full support.?

The food bank is housed in the Minneapolis Labor Center on Central Ave. and University Ave. in Minneapolis. Donations can be dropped off from 8:00 am through 5:00 pm Monday through Friday in Suites 524 or 542.

All striking workers are welcome to come in and pick up free food.

?The community support we?re seeing for these strikers is amazing. Yesterday, volunteers delivered over 30 cases of canned goods and other food,? said McCarthy. ?The labor community is really pulling together to make sure clerical workers have the support they need to win this strike.?
