Housing Authority workers may strike; will rallyTuesday

Service and maintenance workers employed by the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority, facing a possible strike, will rally Tuesday, Dec. 14, outside the Housing Authority.

The rally will start at 7 a.m. at the Authority’s office, 1001 Washington Ave., Minneapolis.

The 76 workers are members of Construction and General Laborers Local 563. They have voted to reject management’s latest contract proposal and authorize a strike, union representative Tim Mackey said.

The workers perform a variety of services at the Housing Authority facilities, including snow removal and salting, main line drain cleaning, preparation of vacant units for occupancy and some plumbing and electrical repairs.

The Minneapolis Public Housing Authority has 40 high-rise apartment buildings with 4,856 units, and 915 single family homes or townhouse units maintained by the workers, the union said.
