Bus workers continue mediation talks

Twin Cities transit workers and Metro Transit are scheduled for four days of mediation this week in an attempt to reach a contract agreement to replace the three-year pact that expired July 31.

‘We’re making a real push to get this thing done,’ said Alan Olson, of the state’s Bureau of Mediation Services. He said he had overseen four previous mediation sessions, and that talks were scheduled for Oct. 10, 11, 12 and 13. ‘The parties have been working hard. We are moving ahead.’

Negotiators have agreed not to speak publicly, and Olson declined to discuss specific issues yet to be resolved.

Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1005 represents about 2,200 bus drivers, clerical office staff and mechanics, Olson said, and negotiates benefits for an additional 500 retirees.

Olson said the 45-day period of mediation required under state law expired Oct. 2, and that the transit workers could file an ‘intent to strike’ notice at any time. If they were to do so, Olson said, there would be a 10-day ‘cooling off’ period, then a 20-day window in which to begin a strike.
