Locked-out sugar workers take aim at Target
26 February 2013
| MINNEAPOLIS - Target Corp. is one of the biggest customers for table sugar produced by American Crystal Sugar, which has locked out 1,300 workers for nearly 19 months. |
The sugar is sold under the label of Target’s house brand, Market Pantry.

Locked-out sugar worker Becki Knapper-Jacobson addressed a rally Tuesday at Target headquarters in downtown Minneapolis.

“Target’s Market Pantry brand of sugar is just Crystal Sugar in another wrapper,” said Becki Knapper-Jacobson, a 30-year employee of American Crystal Sugar’s Moorhead factory. She spoke at a rally Tuesday in front of Target’s corporate headquarters, where participants demanded the company be a leader in reviving Minnesota’s economy. See related story.
Crystal Sugar turned its back on the employees who helped it make record profits, Knapper-Jacobson said. When workers, who are members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco & Grain Millers union, rejected a contract that called for numerous concessions, the company locked the doors on them. Since then, they have struggled to support their families and stay in their homes.
“Crystal Sugar was never hurting for money,” Knapper-Jacobson said. “Neither is Target. They are just a couple greedy corporations putting profit before people.”
Knapper-Jacobson called on Target to remove Crystal Sugar products from its shelves and honor a consumer boycott of the company. |
