Arabanos began her career in the military, but for the past 10 years she has been a supervisor of in-school suspension, or ISS, in the Robbinsdale school district. She has been instrumental in setting standards for how the district reacts to misbehavior, including the use of the ISS program.
Krista Range, assistant principal at Plymouth Middle School, said, "Mrs. Arabanos is someone that people trust and respect; she is truly an inspiration to everyone."
Arabanos is actively involved in her local union, serving as vice president and a building representative for the Robbinsdale Federation of Teachers Education Assistants. She will be the lead negotiator for the next round of contract bargaining.
Arabanos was selected for the state award by a committee of educational support professionals, Education Minnesota leaders and an outside education expert. The education support professional of the year receives a $1,000 honorarium and a trip to the National Education Association’s ESP Conference in March, which will be in Louisville, Ky., this year.
Education Minnesota represents 70,000 teachers and educational support professionals in Minnesota’s public school districts, faculty members at Minnesota’s community and technical colleges and University of Minnesota campuses in Duluth and Crookston, retired educators and student teachers. More information is available at the Education Minnesota website. |
