7 October 2012
| ST. PAUL - Oct. 25 marks the 10th anniversary of the plane crash that killed U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone, his wife Sheila, daughter Marcia and three campaign aides, Mary McEvoy, Tom Lapic, and Will McLaughlin. |
The organization founded to continue Wellstone’s legacy — Wellstone Action — will host two events in October to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the tragedy.
The first event will be Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Leonard Center Gymnasium at Macalester College, 125 South Snelling Ave, St. Paul. Doors open at 6 p.m. Governor Mark Dayton will be the keynote speaker.
The second event will take place Thursday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. at the memorial near the site of the Wellstone plane crash. The Wellstone Memorial and Historic Site is located off of U.S. Highway 53 and Bodas Road just south of Eveleth, Minnesota.
Both events are free and open to the public.
“The 2002 plane crash that took Paul Wellstone, his wife Sheila, his daughter Marcia, and campaign staff Mary McEvoy, Tom Lapic, and Will McLaughlin jolted American politics and broke our hearts,” read a statement by Wellstone Action announcing the two events. “Ten years later, Paul and Sheila’s vision has never mattered more. Please join with Wellstone Action as we gather to remember, honor, and celebrate Paul, Sheila, Marcia, Mary, Tom, and Will, and hear how the Wellstone legacy continues today.”
Wellstone Action offers training nationwide for candidates, political activists, and labor activists, teaching grassroots organizing skills and strategies. For more information on the October events or to RSVP, visit the Wellstone Action website.
