Labor Education Service announces 2012-2013 skills courses

| MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota Labor Education Service will offer six Labor Studies Skills Courses starting this fall, including its first-ever online class. |
The non-credit Labor Studies Skills Courses provide a foundation in “nuts & bolts” areas important to working people and are open to all.

Successful Social Media Strategies for Labor Unions Tuesday, September 11 6 – 9 p.m. Taught by John Nemo This course will share strategies -- featuring real-life examples -- of how labor unions can successfully leverage social media to engage members, impact contract negotiations and create content that shapes public opinion and drives mainstream media coverage. Telling the True Story of Workers Saturday, October 6 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Taught by Barb Kucera When did “union” become a dirty word? How can working people redefine the debate? With workplace issues much in the public eye (Wisconsin, the Occupy movement), working people have an opportunity to tell our story. We’ll examine historical portrayals of workers and the Right Wing’s strategy for controlling the message – and analyze ways to advance a progressive agenda. Tuition is $50. Effective Leadership Styles Saturday, November 17 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Taught by Tony DeAngelis This course is designed to help union members and officers become more successful and effective leaders. It will identify what individual leadership styles we prefer to use, when they are most appropriate and examine our use of power in leadership situations. Tuition is $50. ONLINE COURSE: Introduction to the Labor Movement February 1 to 28 Taught by Labor Education Service staff This is our first Labor Studies Skills course taught exclusively online. You’ll be able to participate from anywhere, at times convenient to you. This introductory class provides an overview of the labor movement – its successes and challenges – in a global context. Learn the structure, organization and evolution of the movement, the impact of union membership on workers and communities and discuss future directions. Contract Negotiations Two Saturdays, March 2 & 9 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Taught by Tony DeAngelis Designed for new and experienced negotiators desiring to sharpen their skills, this course examines the legal framework for collective bargaining, the concept of bargaining power, negotiations preparation, bargaining at the table and the process of mediation. Students will apply learned skills by negotiating a contract in a bargaining simulation. Tuition is $100. For more information, contact Tony at 612-624-1602 or tdeangel@umn.edu. Basic Arbitration Saturday, April 20 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Taught by John Remington This course covers the basic principles of evidence and preparation of witnesses, developing a theory of your case, and the principles arbitrators rely on to decide cases. It will also consider such issues as discipline, contract interpretation standards, past practices, worker rights and management rights. The Labor Education Service is the only educational program in the state specifically focused on the needs of Minnesota workers and their organizations. Since 1951, LES has provided training for hundreds of unions and thousands of workers. LES also offers video, website and other media services. |
