Sugar workers to protest anti-union firm and leaflet Viking and Gopher games
15 September 2011
| MINNETONKA - Union members and supporters plan actions this week to call for an end to the lockout of 1,300 employees of American Crystal Sugar in Minnesota, North Dakota and Iowa. |
On Friday morning, unions will protest outside Strom Engineering, a Minnetonka-based firm that is supplying replacement workers, security staff and consulting services to American Crystal executives who closed the door to workers on Aug. 1.
“The replacements have created an unsafe workplace and may cost the region as the harvest begins,” organizers of the protest said. “Strom has ruined the lives of countless union workers through their strong arm tactics.”
The demonstration will take place at 7:30 a.m. Friday in front of Strom’s headquarters. Participants will meet in the park-and-ride lot at I-394 and Hopkins Crossroads and take shuttles to the action. For more information, contact Adam Robinson.
On Saturday, supporters of the sugar workers will hand out fliers at the University of Minnesota Golden Gopher football game. A similar action is planned Sunday at the Minnesota Vikings game. For more information on those actions, contact Candace Lund. |
