Free tax prep available via United Way’s ‘Claim It!’ program
17 February 2009
| ST. PAUL - Last year Greater Twin Cities United Way’s annual “Claim It!” tax-prep program helped working people and their families collect, on average, $2,200 in tax credits. The program is back in 2009, and you may be eligible for free tax preparation if your individual income is at or below $30,000, or if your household income is at or below $43,000. |
For specific eligibility requirements and a list of free tax preparation sites, call United Way 211 or 651-291-0211 from a cell phone. On the web, go to www.taxes.state.mn.us, and search for “free tax preparation sites.”
“Claim It!” is a United Way-led, community-wide effort to educate eligible families about existing tax credits, particularly the federal earned income tax credit (EITC).
The EITC is a tax credit for people who work and have low wages. Taxpayers who qualify and claim the credit could pay less federal tax, pay no tax, or receive a refund.
Minnesota also offers state earned income credits, called the Working Family Credit. Taxpayers who qualify for the federal earned income tax credit also qualify for the Minnesota Working Family Credit.
