September 7, 1885 - Minnesota’s first Labor Day celebration was held at Cottage Park in White Bear Lake. It was sponsored by the St. Paul Trades & Labor Assembly, an assembly of the Knights of Labor that included carpenters, printers, plasterers, cigarmakers, boot and shoe workers, railroad machinists, streetcar employees and many others. Minnesota’s first Labor Day event was held three years after the first Labor Day, held in 1882 in New York City.
