September 24, 1896 - American short story writer and novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. “The rich are different from you and me,” he wrote, and explored that theme in books such as The Great Gatsby and The Beautiful and the Damned. Gatsby is considered one of the great works of American literature.

“That was always my experience – a poor boy in a rich town; a poor boy in a rich boy’s school; a poor boy in a rich man’s club at Princeton . . .” Fitzgerald wrote in a 1938 letter. “However, I have never been able to forgive the rich for being rich, and it has colored my entire life and works.” (Quotation from “F. Scott Fitzgerald: A Life in Letters,” Scribners, 1994).
