August 22, 1936 - Just as he was becoming a major figure nationally, Minnesota Governor Floyd B. Olson died of stomach cancer. Olson had been the leader of the Farmer-Labor Party and his death left a void. Hundreds of thousands of people filed past his casket as his body lay in state at the Capitol for three days.
