March 12, 1922 - Lane Kirkland, president of the AFL-CIO from 1979 to 1995, was born. He succeeded George Meany at a time when the union movement was in decline and increasingly under attack by employers. Under Kirkland's leadership, the federation focused on international issues, such as support for the Solidarity movement in Poland.
