St. Paul teachers and district reach tentative agreement

St. Paul Federation of Teachers President Denise Rodriguez will brief union leaders Monday on a tentative contract agreement reached Friday with the St. Paul Public Schools.

Negotiators reached the settlement on the 2015-2017 labor contract after an 24-hour session mediated by the state Bureau of Mediation Services.

The contract highlights several areas of mutual interest and key priorities including:

  • Improving school climate
  • Providing additional supports for students and teachers
  • Strengthening family engagement

The District and Federation released a joint statement, saying they “share a belief that positive and nurturing school communities are essential for all students and staff to thrive.”

Saint Paul Federation of Teachers President Denise Rodriguez said, “This tentative agreement represents the hard work of teachers, staff, parents, students and community partners who have stood strong since last May, fighting to create a better school climate that prioritizes racial equity.”

“This tentative agreement represents months of hard work and I’m pleased that we were able to reach this agreement,” said SPPS Superintendent Valeria Silva. “It shows a clear commitment to our students and families while deepening our partnership between the District and our teachers.”

Details of the agreements will be announced to the public once union members have been briefed, the union said.
