Minnesota labor media win national awards

The awards recognize the best work produced in 2007 by the nation\’s labor media, including print publications, websites, and film. They were presented Friday at a conference in Washington, D.C.

The Minneapolis Labor Review won three awards, including second place for "General Excellence" for publications produced by state and central labor bodies. The Labor Review, edited by Steve Share, is published by the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, AFL-CIO. This year\’s award marks the fourth time in the past five years that the Labor Review has won one of the top three awards for general excellence.

This year, the Labor Review also won two first place awards for special performance, competing with international, national and other labor organizations.

The Labor Review won first place for "Best Labor History Story," for Steve Share\’s March 2007 story about the newspaper\’s first ten years.

The Labor Review also won first place for "Best Series," for a 10-part series published in 2007 chronicling each decade of the newspaper\’s 100 years. Steve Share edited the series and wrote the continuing narrative exploring Labor Review history. Other writers contributing stories to the Labor Review centennial series included Kelly Ahern, Ronald G. Cohen, Elizabeth Faue, Barb Kucera, Karl Meller, William Millikan, Iric Nathanson, and Dave Riehle.

This year\’s other ILCA award-winners from Minnesota include UFCW Local 789, North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters, and the University of Minnesota Labor Education Service.

Here\’s more on the awards:

• UFCW Local 789 won three awards for its magazine, Insight, edited by Jennifer Christensen. Insight competed in a group of local union publications with a circulation of 2,500-9,999. Insight won first place for "General Excellence," first place for "Best Cover" for "The Immigration Debate" and second place for "Best Editorial or Column" for "Why is the union helping the immigrants?"

• North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters won two awards for its magazine, North Country Carpenter, edited by Michael Kuchta. North Country Carpenter competed in a group with other regional publications with a circulation of 20,000 or more. The magazine won first place for "General Excellence" and honorable mention for "Best Publication Design."

• The Labor Education Service (LES) at the University of Minnesota won five ILCA awards, including three first place awards and two second place awards. The Workday Minnesota website, edited by Barb Kucera, won first place for "Best Content." The website — www.workdayminnesota.org  — is produced by LES with the support of Minnesota unions. Workday Minnesota features reporting by Kucera and also picks up stories from the Minneapolis Labor Review, St. Paul Union Advocate, and Duluth Labor World.

• LES also won first place for broadcast or cable TV programs for a "Labor News – Fall 2007," a program produced for Minnesota at Work by Randy Croce, Howard Kling, Barb Kucera, and John See.

• LES won first place in the short videos category for "University of Minnesota Strike 2007: Hunger Strikers and Legislators Speak Out," produced by Randy Croce.

• LES won second place in the labor history category for "If Stone Could Speak," produced by Randy Croce.

• LES won second place in the long promos/public relations category for "Health Care: 5% Solution," produced by Howard Kling.
