Low-wage workers plan numerous actions Tuesday

Low-wage workers from across the Twin Cities will march Tuesday for a $15 minimum wage, paid sick days, fair scheduling and an end to wage theft in workplaces. The events are part of a national Day of Action by fast food and other low-wage workers across the country.

Events start with workers gathering at 5:30 a.m. at University and Broadway Avenues in northeast Minneapolis, followed by a march across the Hennepin Avenue bridge to downtown Minneapolis. Rallies are planned outside the downtown Macy’s store at 7:30 a.m. and at City Hall at 9:30 a.m.

Retail janitors who work for contracted companies cleaning stores like Macy’s, Kohl’s, The Home Depot and others have set a deadline of Tuesday for the #StrikeforOurLives. Fast food workers also are scheduled to walk off the job.

Other workers from across Minneapolis will stand with striking janitors and fast food workers, including retail workers, personal care attendants, airport workers and more.

The Nov. 10 events are part of growing political engagement by the Fight for $15, a group of workers BuzzFeed said, “could make up a powerful new voting bloc, and the Associated Press said are displaying, “increasingly potent political muscle.”

A recent poll of workers who earn less than $15 an hour, commissioned by the National Employment Law Project, showed that 69 percent of unregistered voters would register to vote if there was a candidate who supported a $15-an-hour minimum wage and unionization. That’s 48 million potential voters who could turn out if there were candidates who backed higher pay and union rights, NELP said.
