Freedom Library sponsors Black History Month series

The East Side Freedom Library is sponsoring a series of programs in honor of February, Black History Month.

The library, a nonprofit community and cultural organization, is located at 1105 Greenbrier St., on St. Paul’s East Side.

The programs are: 

Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 6 p.m.: Screening and discussion of the documentary film “Brooklyn Castle,” an award-winning documentary about a Brooklyn, NY, junior high school that has won more national chess championships than any other school. The program is co-sponsored by the St. Paul Federation of Teachers

Saturday, Feb. 14, at 3 p.m.: A conversation with Claire O’Connor, the only woman among Minnesota’s six Freedom Riders in the summer of 1961, arrested for promoting voter rights in the South. This program is co-sponsored by the African American Registry.

Saturday, Feb. 21, at 1 p.m.: “Storytelling and the Struggle for Justice,” a conversation with Naima Richmond of the Black Storytellers’ Alliance.

Tuesday, Feb. 24,  at 7 p.m.: “Confronting Slavery Today: How Does the Global Economy Produce It?  What Can We Learn From the 19th Century Movements to End It?,” a presentation by Jim Stewart, founder of Historians Against Slavery.
